Having found a lake that was throwing up some massive bream you can guess where l headed on Monday. Dropping into the same swim that produced the massive bream for me last week l had reservations to as whether the lake would fish as the wind was on the change, atmospherics were falling, as was the temperature. Things were quiet until just into darkness when the odd liner started and by morning six bream had graced my net including another giant of 14lb 4oz!
Wednesday l treated my brother to my newfound paradise but the lake struggled to show its form, mainly down to the weather conditions that were all over the place. Kevin unfortunately never witnessed one of its monster bream but did manage a couple of modest specimens plus a double figured common. I fared the same, however my best bream was 10lb 7oz and the carp went 16lb.
Thursday, back in the same swim saw much better conditions with the wind back to a south west, however night time temperatures dropped to a chilling 4 degrees. The bream were steady up until midnight, after which it went quiet before the carp moved in with six being hooked from first light to 8am. Unfortunately two were lost from hook pulls. but l did manage to catch two at the same time just before leaving, a 23lb 10oz common and a 20lb 8oz mirror, the other two were mid doubles, happy days!
At this point l need to say, that when fishing such a big water you obviously needs to put in quite a bit of bait and then, in most standard bream situations wait, sometimes literally for days. Fortunately very soon after putting it in, I’ve started catching, almost from the off. This maybe that the water lends itself to this style of fishing, but over the last few years the bream have been quite elusive and even today most carper’s haven’t experienced one in many nights of fishing, so for me the quality of bait I’m putting in has to be a contributing factor, so a big thank you to Ian Day at Sonubaits who has listened to my requirements and sent out the perfect mix that he felt would do the business. It’s a new, soon to be released grounbait from Sonubaits, so watch this space, and my results, as you will need to clean the shelves as soon as it’s on sale in the shops!
