I love fishing at Grafham water, but with a 380 mile round trip needed for a day’s fishing, it’s no surprise that I only fish it for one or two days a year!

On my last trip a couple of weeks ago I decided to go all out for zander, I have a few waters that I fish for pike but only a couple that I ever get a chance to target zeds so it’s usually zander or bust for me when I’m on this water. After a couple of hours and a few good fish to around 8lbs I headed for one of the deeper spots and using one of my favourite vertical jigging lures, soon hooked a good fish which unfortunately shed the hook.

Knowing that big zander sometimes group pretty tightly I abandoned the drift and spun the boat back over the same area. The jig had only just hit bottom when ‘BANG’ another good fish hit the lure hard! This one went 12.02 and a great start to my predator season, I had another couple of medium sized zander from that spot but nothing of note.

As the afternoon wore on I had another take in open water that produced another double for me, this one only a few ounces above the target weight. A double double and a great days fishing made the long trip home worthwhile.
